1949 Shaeffer Crest Masterpiece
I have what appears to be a 1949 Shaeffer Crest Masterpiece. It has a black barrel, a gold cap, Touchdown filling mechanism, and two-tone 14k nib marked:
Shaeffer's
Made in USA
14K
[serial number]
Am I correct that 1949--the first year for the Touchdown pens--was the only year to have included a serial number on the nib?

Kupaul, I do not think you have a Sheaffer Masterpiece from your description. The Masterpiece pen is solid 14K gold barrel, cap, etc, and it should be marked 14K on the clip and on the barrel.
Here is a link to Touchdowns, and it might help you ID your pen.
Good luck, Randy
